Anti Wrinkle Injections
No matter how young we feel, the process of ageing inevitably leaves its marks on our faces. Facial aesthetic treatments, also known as facial rejuvenation treatments, offer a non-surgical way of reducing signs of ageing on the face.
As these treatments have become widely available and more affordable than cosmetic surgery, it is important to understand what happens during an appointment and what the effects of the procedure may be.
Anti-wrinkle injections are injectable treatments that use botulinum toxin type A. Brands include Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and others. They temporarily relax facial muscles, reducing dynamic wrinkles, which are lines formed by facial movements such as frowning, smiling or squinting.
Common treatment areas include forehead lines, frown lines between the eyebrows, crowโs feet around the eyes, bunny lines at the sides of the nose, lip lines or smokerโs lines, and neck bands.
Treatment usually takes 10 to 30 minutes. Discomfort is minimal and often feels like tiny pinches. Results start appearing in 3 to 5 days and usually peak at 10 to 14 days. Results typically last 3 to 4 months.
Possible side effects include bruising, swelling or redness at the injection site, temporary headache or flu-like symptoms, and rare temporary effects such as drooping eyelids or uneven results. Some patients may experience reduced effect over time with frequent use.
Before treatment, it is advisable to avoid alcohol, blood thinners and anti-inflammatory medication for 24 to 48 hours to reduce bruising. After treatment, avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for 24 hours, stay upright for 4 hours, and avoid intense exercise and heat such as saunas for 24 hours.

Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are injectable treatments designed to restore lost volume, smooth lines and enhance facial contours. They are often used alongside or instead of anti-wrinkle injections to target static wrinkles, which are present at rest, and volume loss due to ageing.
Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, use a hydrating natural sugar found in the body. They are temporary, usually lasting 6 to 18 months depending on the product and treatment area, and can be reversed with an enzyme called hyaluronidase.
Other filler types include calcium hydroxylapatite, used for deeper lines or volume loss and often lasting 12 to 18 months; poly-L-lactic acid, which stimulates collagen production and provides gradual results over several months; and polymethylmethacrylate, a semi-permanent option sometimes used for deeper wrinkles or acne scars.
Common treatment areas include cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lips, jawline, chin, tear troughs and hands. Treatment usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. Results from hyaluronic acid fillers are immediate, while some products build gradually over weeks. Downtime is minimal, although swelling or bruising can last 1 to 5 days. Longevity ranges from 6 to 24 months depending on the filler type and area.
Temporary risks include swelling, redness, bruising, tenderness and lumpiness. Rare but serious complications can include vascular occlusion, infection and granulomas. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved if required.
Before treatment, avoid alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and vitamin E for 3 to 5 days where appropriate. Always inform your injector about any health conditions or medications. After treatment, gently ice the area to reduce swelling, avoid intense exercise, heat and alcohol for 24 to 48 hours, and avoid facial massage unless instructed.

Profhilo
Profhilo is made from 100 percent pure hyaluronic acid, but it is not a dermal filler. It is classified as a bioremodelling treatment, meaning it improves skin quality from within rather than filling or plumping specific areas. It spreads easily beneath the skin, acting like an injectable moisturiser that hydrates and rejuvenates.
Profhilo contains two types of hyaluronic acid, high and low molecular weight, to provide deep hydration and collagen stimulation. Once injected, it spreads across the dermis to stimulate fibroblasts, keratinocytes and adipocytes. This boosts collagen, elastin and natural hyaluronic acid production.
Common treatment areas include the face, neck, dรฉcolletage, hands, arms and abdomen, particularly where skin appears crepey or lax. Treatment time is usually 15 to 30 minutes. The usual programme involves 2 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart, although some mature skin may benefit from a third session.
Downtime is minimal, although small bumps may be visible for 24 to 48 hours. Results are usually noticeable from 3 to 4 weeks after the second treatment and can last 6 to 9 months, with maintenance treatments recommended every 6 months.
Side effects may include temporary redness, swelling or small lumps at injection sites, usually settling within 1 to 2 days. Due to the pure hyaluronic acid formulation, the risk of allergic reaction or complication is very low, but Profhilo should only be performed by trained medical professionals.
Fees: 1 session from ยฃ220, 2 sessions from ยฃ400. Book a free consultation with Dr Belichka to discuss whether Profhilo is suitable for you.
Polynucleotides
Polynucleotide treatments are a new generation of injectable skin boosters. They support powerful skin regeneration using DNA fragments derived from salmon or trout sperm to stimulate cellular repair, collagen production and tissue regeneration.
Polynucleotides are long chains of nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA and RNA. In aesthetic medicine, these purified and biocompatible molecules support skin healing, improve elasticity and enhance hydration, especially for tired, thin or damaged skin.
Polynucleotides stimulate fibroblast activity, increasing collagen and elastin production. They hydrate the skin deeply by attracting water in a similar way to hyaluronic acid, improve tissue oxygenation and microcirculation, reduce inflammation and support skin regeneration.
Common treatment areas include fine lines and wrinkles, under-eye dark circles and thinning, acne scarring, crepey or loose skin, stretch marks, post-laser or microneedling recovery, rosacea and sensitive skin.
Treatment time is usually 20 to 40 minutes. A typical protocol involves 2 to 4 sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart, with maintenance every 6 to 9 months. Downtime is minimal, although mild swelling, redness or small bumps can appear for 1 to 2 days. Results improve gradually over 2 to 6 weeks and usually last 6 to 9 months depending on the product and skin condition.
Possible side effects include bruising, swelling or redness at the injection site, temporary headache or flu-like symptoms, and rare temporary effects such as drooping eyelids or uneven results. Some people may experience less effect over time with frequent use.
Polynucleotides are best suited to people with dehydrated or dull skin, fine lines, early signs of ageing, thin or crepey skin under the eyes or on the neck, and sensitive or inflamed skin such as rosacea. They are ideal for patients who want natural skin quality improvement rather than added volume.
Fees: 1 session ยฃ180. Book a free consultation with Dr Belichka to discuss whether polynucleotides are suitable for you.
